INTRODUCTION TO THE DRAMA SECTION OF MMM VOL. IX.
by Patrick Lawler
WORK THAT TAKES US TO THE EDGE
Many Mountains Moving is pleased to announce this new section devoted to writing as performance. Jose Rivera has said, “Theatre is the explanation of life to the living.” We are in great need of these explanations—but there are so few opportunities to read and experience such voices. Many Mountains Moving would like to acknowledge and celebrate the role drama and some hybrid mediums play in combining poetry, story, and performance. The pieces included in this section challenge some of the traditional theater conventions. These works go to the roots, provoke and engage, and ultimately take us to the edge. As you read these pieces, imagine them presented in the space between the word and the world, between the page and the stage. What better way to experience the deepening intimacy and the critically engaged, the visceral and the vibrational than to hear the human voices alive on these pages.
The first play of the month online will be Bedtime Story, by Lori-Nan Engler....
